Being aware of its symptoms and signs is very important when sharing your residence with animals.

One of the easiest ways to recognize ringworm in dogs is through lost patches of fur. Ringworm hardens the skin and fur follicles which causes the fur to break off at the foundation.

The ringworm dog skin in the area of the infection will appear as a red raised circular rash. It may look kind of crusty or scaly, with the center area appearing mostly natural.

You will probably see your dog scratching the spot because the ringworm rash is extremely itchy. Try and keep your dog from scratching the infection if at all possible.

Scratching will cause the rash to spread. If the animal is free to wander around the residence it can easily spread the rash to its owner through direct or indirect contact.

Your vet will then recommend a remedy. There are more than a few unique treatments available to purge your dog of ringworm. All are simple to do and just take persistence. The growth period between exposure and occurrence with ringworm is ten days.

If you do not completely rid your dog or dwelling or ringworm re-infestation can occur. You will need to stay on top of it and put in the work so it can be eliminated speedily. The first step is to begin treating your dog. Your vet might prescribe medication, cream or shampoo.

Always follow your vet’s prescribed treatment to the tee. The most common prescribed medication is an anti-fungal shampoo. Anti-fungal creams do not work well on dogs as they will lick them off.

Shampoo will get rid of the fungus spores from the hair and treatment is applied all over the dog’s body at once helping to eliminate fungus spores that have not yet revealed symptoms. Most likely more then one bath treatment is needed to rid your dog totally.

Along with the treatment of the dog itself, it is important to take care of your house for ringworm. Launder your dog’s bedding each day with bleach and hot water. Avoid direct contact with your dog to avoid becoming infected yourself. If you have other dogs or cats living in your house make sure that you treat them as well.

Using the ringworm shampoo on them even if they do not have ringworm will not hurt them. The worst thing you can do with ringworm is to not treat it completely. So, when your dog is diagnosed with it, make sure to do everything you need to do everyday and when symptoms subside in your dog, take it back to the vet and have them retest your dog’s hair to make certain that the fungus is really gone.
